Birthstones for October are Opal and Tourmaline

In the Middle Ages people believed the opal provided great luck. This was due to the variety of colours representing the different virtues of each gemstone.

It was also believed that by wrapping an opal in a fresh bay leaf and holding it in your hand the person holding the opal would achieve invisibility. 😊

Olympic Australia is the worlds largest and most valuable opal, measuring 11 inches long and weights 17,000 carats.  It was valued at $2.5 million in 2005. It originated from Coober Pedy, Australia in 1956.

Opals generally are found in Australia however they are also mined in Brazil, Honduras,, Czech Republic, Navada, Idaho, and Mexico.

There are many varieties of Opal. These are just a few of the many different types of Opals - Black Opal, Crystal Opal, Boulder Opal, Koroit Opal, Mintabie, Tinenbar and Yowah Opal.

No two tourmaline gems are exactly alike, which makes this a one-of-a-kind gift for any individual—especially someone celebrating an October birthday or an eighth wedding anniversary.

Tourmaline is not one mineral, but a fairly complex group of minerals with different chemical compositions and physical properties. Certain trace elements produce distinct colours, and many resulting varieties have their own names: Verdelite or green tourmaline, Paraiba tourmaline, Achroite or colourless tourmaline, Parti-coloured tourmaline.

With such a wide variety of colours, tourmaline can suit a range of budgets. Like diamonds, tourmaline is evaluated by colour, clarity, cut and carat weight.

Egyptian legend tells that tourmaline found its famed array of colours when, on its journey up from the earth’s center, it passed through a rainbow. Because of its colourful occurrences, tourmaline has been confused with other gems throughout history.

September’s birth stone is Sapphire.  Sapphires are also used to celebrate a 45th Anniversary.

Some believe the healing properties of a sapphire are Wisdom, Love, Loyalty and Spiritual Development. Known as the Wisdom Stone the different colours of each stone bring’s its own type of wisdom and additional attributes.

Sapphire is commonly associated with the colour blue. When Jewellers use the word “sapphire” they are generally referring to the blue sapphire, however if they state a colour before the word sapphire they are referring to a particular colour of sapphire.

The name Sapphire is believed to come from the Greek word “sappheiros”. It is also believed the ancient Romans and Greeks elite thought the wearing of the sapphire would protect them from envy and harm.
